Branding & logo design

A mark earns its keep at 16 pixels.

We draw logotypes by hand — for metal bands who need something that cuts on a shirt and a backdrop, and for businesses who need one that holds on a storefront and in a browser tab. No stock fonts with a bevel on them. No brief that ends at a JPG.

Band · Metal

Three words stacked into one silhouette, so it reads on a backdrop from the back of the room and still cuts on a shirt.

Wide, symmetrical and spiked. One word gets one job: own the centre of the artwork.

Looser and faster than the rest — a script that keeps its legibility even as the strokes run off the ends.

The size test

One drawing, three jobs.

A logo is not finished when it looks good on the screen you drew it on. We check every mark at the three sizes it actually has to live at — and keep cutting detail until the smallest one still reads.

Below is the Black Lantern mark at each of them — the wordmark where there is room, and the compact cut where there is not.

How a mark gets made

Four weeks, no mood boards.

  1. 01

    Listen

One call. What you sound like, who you're for, and every place the mark has to go — the van, the shirt, the sign, the socials.

  2. 02

    Draw

Three directions, drawn not picked. You see them in black and white first, because a mark that needs colour to work doesn't work.

  3. 03

    Cut

Two rounds on the one you pick. Strokes get thicker, gaps get wider, and anything that dies under 32 px comes out.

  4. 04

    Hand over

Vectors, flats, a one-colour version for the printer, a favicon, and a page telling you how to use it. Yours outright.

Taking on new work
